Is This Your Last Issue of Connections?

Is this going to be your last issue of Connections? As many of you may recall, three years ago we ran an article titled "This Is the Last Issue of Connections" as an April Fools' joke because that Friday was April 1st. Remarkably, we received more than 100 complaints via email or phone telling us how disappointed our readers were that the weekly publication was being discontinued, which necessitated response emails and phone calls assuring everyone that we were only kidding.

That being said, since today is March 29th, we assure you that this time our inquiry above is no joke. Numerous reminders during the past three months advised that membership fees for 2019 are due by this Sunday, March 31, so if we haven't received your renewal payment yet, your company's benefits will be terminated on Monday, April 1st, which includes receiving the weekly issues of Connections.

If you have not paid your 2019 DPHA dues yet, it is not too late, but you should also be aware that there will now be a 3 or 4 day delay in getting your membership benefits re-established. As you know, dues are only $715 per year and we believe this is an incredible value given the benefits that the Association offers its members. If you are unsure as to whether or not you renewed your membership for this year and don't want to take a chance that your issues of Connections will be discontinued and your other member benefits terminated, contact Rebekah Covay now at rebekah@dpha.net or via phone at 630-854-3911 (if you get her voice mail, please leave a message). We truly appreciate everyone's past support, and hope we count on your participation again in 2019.

April Fool's Day Frolics Through History

This coming Monday is April 1st, a day that is near and dear to your editor. Did you ever wonder why so many people play pranks on others on April 1? Historians are unsure of the exact origins of this special day. Some believe it dates back to ancient Rome when festivals such as Hilaria were celebrated at the end of March. People would dress in disguises during the celebration.

A second theory is that April Fool's Day was tied to the first day of spring when Mother Nature fooled everyone with unpredictable and changing weather. Those in the mid-Atlantic can appreciate this explanation, especially the past few years. Seventy degrees in February and snow on the first day of Spring. Another theory is that this day of pranks dates back to 1582 when France officially changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar per mandate from the Council of Trent. Some of the citizens failed to get the message and became the brunt of jokes and pranks.

Most likely, we suspect April Fool's was started in England around 1700 when people began to play practical jokes on one another. It then spread throughout the British Isles. In the 18th century, Scotland had a two-day celebration. On the first day, people were sent on phony errands. The second day, known as Tailie Day, involved such sophomoric acts as pinning tails or "kick me" signs on the rear ends of unsuspecting victims.

The tradition of pranks has continued until today. Some of the great April Fool's day hoaxes include the following:
  • In 1996, Taco Bell announced that it had purchased the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and was going to rename it Taco Liberty Bell.
  • In 1998, Burger King announced it had developed a left-handed whopper.
  • Who can forget Sports Illustrated's immortal Sidd Finch who was reported to be able to throw a 168 mile per hour fastball?
  • In 2007, Google announced a new product, Gmail Paper, which would print emails, stack them in a box and ship them to your door.
  • In 1998, New Mexicans for Science and Reason published that the Alabama legislature voted to change the value of Pi to a purer biblical version of 3.0.
  • In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers had harvested a record spaghetti crop and showed video of people picking pasta from trees.
What is your favorite April Fool's gag? Please share it with us on the DPHA Facebook Page or LinkedIn Group. And yes indeed, Connections will be back next week if you have renewed your 2019 DPHA annual dues. Happy April Fools!

Announcing DPHA's Northern California Regional CEU Summit on April 24

The Northern California Regional Committee, under the astute leadership of Phil Hotarek, is delighted to announce the first DPHA Regional CEU Summit, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 24th at the Country Floors in Design Center Showplace Square (San Francisco Design Center) in San Francisco, CA. Please pass the word along to members of the A & D community who might be able to attend, and tell them to come see the latest trends and materials in the industry while networking with local representatives. And yes, food and beverages will be served. For more information or to register for one, two or three CEU sessions, click here.

App of the Issue: Honey (No, We're Not being Fresh)

Regularly, DPHA will highlight applications that can make your job and life easier. If you have an app that you particularly enjoy and that you believe could benefit your fellow DPHA members, please forward the information to Jim Babbitt at jbabbitt@dpha.net.

Honey is a service that makes it ridiculously easy to save money and time. Honey automatically finds coupon codes for online shopping sites and applies them to your order when you check out, saving you money and coupon searching time.  Instead of having to search dozens of coupon sites to find coupon codes to save cash on your purchases, you can leave that work all to your Honey app, and it’ll find your coupon codes for you AND apply them to your purchase.

What’s really cool about using Honey (instead of searching yourself) is that if you’ve ever searched the various coupon sites for codes when you shop, many of the coupon codes you find if you search manually for them don’t work. Honey’s job is to help get that time back for you all the while making this process absolutely painless. After you simply install the extension for your desktop browser (only Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Opera), the little extension goes to work for you by scouring the Internet for every website you land on. Honey’s technological expertise makes coupon finding super fast, and you don’t have to do anything but click the Honey button on your browser bar.

This happens quickly and seamlessly, and you won’t even miss the time. And, Honey can be installed on multiple computers and multiple browsers on your computers, so you’re not limited in where you can use it on your PC or laptop.
When Honey finds a coupon or discount, the Honey app then lights up with the available coupons it found for that retailer. You can click on the button to see what is available BEFORE you shop or you can wait until checkout and let Honey do the real magic.

Honey also works with Amazon. Since coupon codes are very product specific when on Amazon’s site, rarely will you find a coupon for the product you are looking for. However, Honey does search Amazon’s site and makes sure you are getting the best deal. If not, Honey notifies you to let you know you could buy from a different seller and save money.

There’s also another benefit to using Honey: the HoneyGold program, which is the company’s cash back rewards program. As you start to use the Honey, you will accumulate points which you can later to redeem for Amazon Gift Cards.

Did You Know That 2019 Conference Information is Right at Your Fingertips?

We have been getting several calls lately regarding the 2019 DPHA Annual Conference and Product Showcase, and although Rebekah and Jim are here to assist you in any way we can, did you know that often times you can get an immediate answer to your question by visiting our website and following the path "Calendar of Events > Conference and regional Meetings"? We continually update this area, and there you can get the general information about the 2019 annual conference, the conference schedule and the Product Showcase (again, we will begin the overall registration process sometime during the second half of April).

Of course, if you prefer the somewhat more delayed "human" approach, feel free to contact Rebekah Covay at "rebekah@dpha.net" or 630-854-3911, or Jim Babbitt at "jbabbitt@dpha.net" or 847-567-1792. We always love talking to you!

Sunday is St. Partick's Days, So Here's Some Fun Facts You May Not Have Known

This Sunday, March 17th, is St. Patrick's Day, and although people know the tradition is to wear green, and possibly join your friends for a drink or two (and sometimes, more than that), here are some interesting and/or fun facts about the person and the holiday you may not have known:

  • For most of Christianity's first thousand years, canonisations were done on the diocesan or regional level. Relatively soon after the death of people considered very holy, the local Church affirmed that they could be liturgically celebrated as saints. As a result, Patrick has never been formally canonised by a Pope; nevertheless, various Christian churches declare that he is a Saint in Heaven (and yes, he is officially listed in the List of Saints).

  • St. Patrick's Day was a dry holiday in Ireland until 1970. Aside from the color green, the activity most associated with St. Patrick's Day is drinking. However, Irish law, from 1903 to 1970, declared St. Patrick's Day a religious observance for the entire country meaning that all pubs were shut down for the day. That meant no beer, not even the green kind, for public celebrants. The law was overturned in 1970, when St. Patrick's Day was reclassified as a national holiday - allowing the taps to flow freely once again.

  • There are more Irish in the USA than Ireland (well, sort of). An estimated 34 million Americans have Irish ancestry. Some are pure-blood Irish, meaning they or their parents came from Ireland, but many more have mixed ancestry today. By contrast, there are 4.2 million people living in Ireland.

  • The original color associated with St. Patrick is blue, not green as commonly believed. In several artworks depicting the saint, he is shown wearing blue vestments. Green was associated with the country later, presumably because of the greenness of the countryside, due to Ireland's plentiful rainfall.

  • According to legend, St. Patrick drove all the snakes, or in some translations, "toads," out of Ireland. In reality, this probably did not occur, as there is no evidence that snakes have ever existed in Ireland, the climate being too cool for them to thrive. Despite that, scholars suggest that the term "snakes" may be figurative and refer to pagan religious beliefs and practices rather than reptiles or amphibians.

  • St. Patrick wasn't Irish, and he wasn't born in Ireland. Patrick's parents were Roman citizens living in modern-day England, or more precisely in Scotland or Wales (scholars cannot agree on which). He was born in 385 AD. By that time, most Romans were Christians and the Christian religion was spreading rapidly across Europe.

  • March 17th is actually when Patrick died - his holy day is the day of his death, and subsequent entrance to heaven, rather than the day of his physical birth. After spending most of his adult life converting the pagans of Ireland to Christianity, St. Patrick went to his reward on March 17, 461 AD.

  • World's shortest St. Patrick's Day parade - For many years, Dripsey in County Cork had the world's shortest parade, just 77 feet, the distance between two pubs – The Weigh Inn and The Lee Valley.

Now that you know more about St. Patrick's day, feel free to amaze your fiends with a plethora of meaningless tidbits while tipping a few and wearing green. And don't forget to have a designated driver if you are out and about.

Your Monthly Reminder About DPHA's Faces-of-Our-Future Recognition Program

DPHA's Faces-of-Our-Future Program recognizes up-and-coming influencers in the decorative plumbing and hardware industry. This program continues to focus on profiling dealers, manufacturers and independent sales agents with 10 or less years of industry experience. Each month from May through October 2019, two or three members will be inducted into the Faces-of-Our-Future Club, and their stories will be featured in DPHA's weekly newsletter, Connections. To submit your nominations, click here to download the nomination form, complete it and send your nomination to Rebekah Covay at rebekah@dpha.net or fax it to 630-618-3801.

Why should you nominate someone for this honor? Because the number one reason people leave an employer or this industry is a lack of recognition They don't believe their work or effort is recognized or appreciated. Here's a quick, easy and no-cost opportunity to say thank you to top-notch up-and-comers and provide them with an opportunity to have their accomplishments and efforts recognized by the industry's leading trade organization. It takes only a few minutes to complete a nomination form, but isn't that time well spent for recognizing someone who is making an impact on your
business and/or our industry?

Don't Forget to "Spring Ahead" Saturday Night!

Don't forget before you go to bed this Saturday night, March 9th (or Sunday morning, March 10th, for those of you who are so inclined to stay up late) to set your clocks ahead one hour since most of the United States begins Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. Those places in the U.S. that do NOT observe Daylight Saving Time are Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and Arizona.

And just because we can't help ourselves, here are a few facts you may not have known about Daylight Saving Time:

  • The idea of daylight saving was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin during his sojourn as an American delegate in Paris in 1784, in an essay, "An Economical Project." Some of Franklin's friends, inventors of a new kind of oil lamp, were so taken by the scheme that they continued corresponding with Franklin even after he returned to America.

  • In September 1999, the West Bank was on Daylight Saving Time while Israel had just switched back to standard time. West Bank terrorists prepared time bombs and smuggled them to their counterparts in Israel, who misunderstood the time on the bombs. As the bombs were being planted, they exploded - one hour too early - killing three terrorists instead of the intended victims - two busloads of people.

  • Amtrak - to keep to their published timetables, trains cannot leave a station before the scheduled time. So, when the clocks fall back one hour in October, all Amtrak trains in the U.S. that are running on time stop at 2:00 a.m. and wait one hour before resuming. Overnight passengers are often surprised to find their train at a dead stop and their travel time an hour longer than expected. At the spring Daylight Saving Time change, trains instantaneously become an hour behind schedule at 2:00 a.m., but they just keep going and do their best to make up the time.

  • While twins born at 11:55 p.m. and 12:05 a.m. may have different birthdays, Daylight Saving Time can change birth order - on paper, anyway. During the time change in the fall, one baby could be born at 1:55 a.m. and the sibling born ten minutes later, at 1:05 a.m. In the spring, there is a gap when no babies are born at all: from 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.

  • In the United States, Daylight Saving Time commences at 2:00 a.m. to minimize disruption. However, many states restrict bars from serving alcohol between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. At 2:00 a.m. in the fall, however, the time switches back one hour. So, can bars serve alcohol for that additional hour? Some states claim that bars actually stop serving liquor at 1:59 a.m., so they have already stopped serving when the time reverts to Standard Time. Other states solve the problem by saying that liquor can be served until "two hours after midnight." In practice, however, many establishments stay open an extra hour in the fall.

  • In the U.S., 2:00 a.m. was originally chosen as the changeover time because it was practical and minimized disruption. Most people were at home and this was the time when the fewest trains were running. It is late enough to minimally affect bars and restaurants, and it prevents the day from switching to yesterday, which would be confusing. It is early enough that the entire continental U.S. switches by daybreak, and the changeover occurs before most early shift workers and early churchgoers are affected.

DPHA has been receiving numerous inquiries regarding booth registration for the 2019 Product Showcase at our annual conference, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Seattle in Seattle, WA, November 7-10. We want to reassure everyone that no, if you are a DPHA member and interested in exhibiting this year, you have not missed anything. We are working on the floor plan for the Product Showcase now. In keeping with our usual process, sometime during the second half of April 2019, we will send out notices for booth sign-ups and selections in the following order:

  • Platinum corporate sponsors (and then usually 4 working days later ...)
  • Gold corporate sponsors (and then usually 4 working days later ...)
  • Silver corporate sponsors (and then usually 4 working days later ...)
  • Bronze corporate sponsors (and then usually 4 working days later ...)
  • 2019 Conference sponsors (and then usually 3 working days later ...)
  • 2018 Exhibitors (and then usually 4 working days later ...)
  • General membership

Additionally, when booth registration is open to the general membership, it will be announced in Connections as well as in a separate email blast and on our social media. Keep your eyes open for more updates and the booth registration announcements. We only have 72 booth spaces (10' by 10') again this year, and if things go like they did the past several years, the booths will be completely booked within two or three weeks after registration has been opened to everyone.

If you have any other questions or need help with something else, don't hesitate to contact Rebekah Covay at rebekah@dpha.net or via phone at 630-854-3911. And for those who are inquiring about our regular conference attendee registration, we will be sending out those notices sometime in June 2019.

Want Your New Products or Company Updates in Issues of Connections? Just Keep Those Cards and Letters Coming!

"How do we get some of our new product offerings or news updates about our company published in Connections." We have been asked this question so often over the past few months that we wanted to let everyone know exactly how this process works.

The items featured in Connections in the "Vendor News, Updates and Cool New Stuff” section, and which are then subsequently posted on our social media the following week, are available to any of our members at no charge, because this is considered a benefit of membership. Feel free to send any announcements about new products or company updates to Jim Babbitt, and we will be happy to include them in upcoming issues of Connections (also, please include an image, if at all possible).

There is no limit to the amount of things you can send, but be aware that we use no more than 5 articles per issue, and if we have more than that we give preference to those companies who have not been mentioned most recently. We may also condense some of the items to not only avoid having them be too long, but to make them also NOT sound like an advertisement, which can often be the case when we get announcements.

We publish Connections on a weekly basis, therefore there is no deadline. Send Jim things when you have them, and we will use them as described above.
