In case you haven't been paying attention, the final day for submitting award nominations is this coming Wednesday, July 31.

Everyone wants to be appreciated and recognized for their contributions, but few of us take the time to say thank you to our exceptional peers for what they do for our companies, our organization and our industry. We want to keep changing this trend by encouraging you to submit applications and nominations to the 2019 DPHA Awards program. The deadline to submit applications and nominations is this coming Wednesday, July 31, for the following honors:

Just click on the "Awards Program" menu and scroll down the page to the link for the online award nominations. For those who prefer the traditional route, you can also download form-fillable PDFs of the different award nominations by clicking on the appropriate links. Or if you would simply like us to send the application forms to you and you are a member of the Association, send an email to rebekah@dpha.net with your request.

For the Product of the Year awards (POTYs), DPHA has again assembled an independent panel of distinguished industry editors, designers and professionals for judging the five different products of the year. Those judges are:

  1. Mary Jo Peterson, Mary Jo Peterson Design
  2. Alissa Ponchione, Assistant Editor Hospitality Design
  3. Eliot Sefrin, Editor Emeritus of KBDN
  4. Alena Capra, Alena Capra Designs
  5. Molly Switzer, Molly Switzer Designs

The Awards Committee added the Dealer's Choice Award a few years ago that provides another opportunity for manufacturers and representatives to promote their products as award-worthy in front of the staffs of every DPHA dealer. The Dealer's Choice Award works as follows:

  • Every product submitted for the 2019 Product of the Year (POTYs) will be eligible to win the Dealer's Choice Award.
  • Voting will take place immediately following the annual conference and will be open for approximately six weeks.
  • All dealer showroom staff members who have a DPHA login will be eligible to vote. One vote per person.
  • The winner will be announced during the opening session of the 2020 Conference.

Manufacturers - when was the last time you were handed a golden opportunity to have your new products analyzed and critiqued by leading journalists of publications that are read and respected by your clients and prospects? DPHA is providing you this opportunity. Be sure to take advantage of it.

Council of Fellows' Spotlight: Jamie Gregg

DPHA created the Council of Fellows to recognize career accomplishments. In keeping with DPHA’s tradition of innovation and defying convention, election to DPHA’s Council of Fellows is not simply an honor. It also is a call to continue to serve our organization and industry. The Council of Fellows does not have an agenda or mandate. The Council is expected to undertake projects that it deems important and vital to the continued success of our industry. As DPHA has matured, the organization continues to look to the Council of Fellows as a strategic think tank.

This week we feature Jamie Gregg...

Jamie Gregg's commitment to the decorative plumbing and hardware industry has been unwavering. In fact, he and his company Colonial Bronze stand apart. For nearly 90 years, Colonial Bronze has been serving the decorative plumbing and hardware industry and stands as the last remaining manufacturer of high-end DPH product in the United States. The company evolved from its humble roots in the Bronx, NY, to a state-of-the-art, environmentally compliant manufacturing facility located in Torrington, CT.

Jamie is one of the founding members of DPHA. He attended the organizing meeting in December 2001 and served on the first Board of Directors. In 2004, Jamie became DPHA's second president. Jamie's contributions and accomplishments in the DPH industry also are reflected by the company's commitment to establish effective partnerships with showrooms. Jamie believes that effective partnerships between the three principal parties in the supply chain — manufacturers, reps and showrooms — must achieve a symbiotic balance in order to succeed. Symbiotic balance demands that every partner benefits meaningfully and significantly. Jamie's approach, commitment, support of the channel and his dedication to advancing the professionalism of the DPH industry made his election to the DPHA Council of Fellows logical and more than deserving.

DPHA Members' Blog - July 19, 2019

Each week DPHA publishes a new post to our Members' Blog. This blog is available to DPHA members only. Making Smaller Bathrooms Appear Larger

Not every home in (name of service territory) can accommodate a double shower, freestanding soaker tub, dual vanities, an abundance of cabinet and storage space and so on.  When space is at a premium, specifying different components in the bath, color options and light selection can help make smaller baths appear bigger. Here are several suggestions:

I'll Eat and Drink to That: A Winning Combination, Peer Recognition and the Seattle Food & Wine Tour

The Awards Committee has an offer you could refuse, but won't want to. The Committee wants to take you on a food and wine tour at the 2019 Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington. Sponsored by Baci by Remcraft and Barber Wilsons/Sterlingham, the walking tour groups will depart the Hyatt Regency Seattle on Wednesday, November 6th at 3 and 3:30 p.m. and will return sometime around 6 and 6:30 p.m.

This 3-hour tasting extravaganza will visit unique and off-the-beaten path local restaurants. From appetizers to desserts, you'll taste your way through Seattle with your professional tour host. Come hungry and be ready for fun!

16 of the 32 available spots will be awarded to those who submit 2019 nominations for the Showroom, Manufacturing and Representative Professionals of the Year and for Customer Service Department, Rep Agency and Showroom of the Year. For each nomination that someone submits for a peer in any of these six distinguished categories, the nominator will receive a raffle ticket for one of the no-cost 16 spots to be part of the Seattle food and wine tour. The remaining 16 spots are available for purchase at $125 per seat (with all proceeds going to the Council of Fellows' Scholarship Fund). For more information, or if you have questions, please contact Rebekah Covay at 630-854-3911 or via email at rebekah@dpha.net.

Taking a tour of downtown Seattle is great, but recognizing someone who gives unselfishly of themselves to advance their industry - priceless! If you have ever won an award or have been recognized by your peers, you know how wonderful that is. How many peers can you think of that truly deserve to have a similar peer-recognition experience? Spend a few minutes and give them the recognition they are due. Visit the members only side of the DPHA web site to access the awards criteria and nomination process, or email Rebekay Covay for further information.

Council of Fellows' Spotlight: Hank Darlington

DPHA created the Council of Fellows to recognize career accomplishments. In keeping with DPHA’s tradition of innovation and defying convention, election to DPHA’s Council of Fellows is not simply an honor. It also is a call to continue to serve our organization and industry. The Council of Fellows does not have an agenda or mandate. The Council is expected to undertake projects that it deems important and vital to the continued success of our industry. As DPHA has matured, the organization continues to look to the Council of Fellows as a strategic think tank.

This week we feature Hank Darlington...

Hank Darlington, along with the late Charles Goldberg, were the first two decorative plumbing and hardware dealers to have served on the NKBA Board of Directors. Through their efforts, decorative plumbing and hardware became a distinctly recognized discipline. In recognizing Darlington at the 2005 DPHA Annual Meeting, DPHA President Bill Fiddler claimed, "Hank helped put the bath in kitchen and bath."

Darlington, along with his wife Carol, built the Plummery in Sacramento and Oakland into one of the nation's great showroom operations. After selling the business, Darlington continues to give back to his industry by consulting with numerous showrooms and manufacturers, sharing his wisdom, business acumen and experience. He is the author of The Complete Business Management Guide for Kitchen & Bath Professionals, Human Resource Management, The Complete Business Management Guide and Kitchen & Bath Business Management.

Darlington still writes bi-monthly columns for Supply House Times. He also is the creator and presenter of the National Kitchen & Bath Association's Business Owner Symposium. He has served in the NKBA National Executive Committee, as a member of the NKBA Board of Directors and a former chairman of the Decorative Plumbing and Hardware Council.
